The results of our re-design and experimentation of grapevine agrosystem, as well as on the other crops (Lançon et al., 2007 and Wery & Langeveld, 2010) show promising perspectives of the prototyping method to achieve high goals for performance and innovation. The complexity of the grapevine agrosystem (ie the number of technical interventions and their potential interactions) requires a strong systemic approach at the interface between the technical and biophysical dimensions of cropping systems (Rapidel et al., 2009). The approach must implement agro-ecological processes to greatly limit inputs. It also required a high innovation and significant changes in the grapevine agrosystem genetics, structure and management. Our results point out the need to... |

Organic farming is often considered to be the most environmentally-friendly crop management system, even if integrated production also aims at decreasing the impact of agriculture on the natural environment. In order to establish references for the agro-environmental evaluation of these two production systems in relation to grape growing, INRA carried out an initial study from 2001 to 2004 at the plot scale. This study focused on two grape varieties (Merlot N and Cabernet Sauvignon) in its Couhins vineyard (Graves cru classé), located on two organically-farmed plots and two plots using integrated production, a system based on the implementation of decision rules aimed at limiting the number of pest control treatments. Production means only differed in... |

The objective of the UE-funded program REPCO (FP6) was to identify new alternatives to copper fungicides in organic farming. Two pathogens have been considered: grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) and apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). Research on grapevine was carried out by GRAB (Avignon, France) and FEM-IASMA (San Michele all’Adige, Italy). Trials were carried out under natural conditions in order to test reduced doses of copper and copper-free alternatives. Five-year trials proved that copper is the best fungicide. However, the use of new low copper rate formulations and the association of copper-free alternatives with reduced doses of copper or with reduced number of copper applications (limited to the most susceptible grapevine growth stages)... |

Several characteristics of Orius laevigatus (Fieber) and Orius niger (Wollf) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) are investigated in the laboratory and in the vineyards. Indigenous O.laevigatus, O. niger and O.laevigatus from biofactory are compared as for the following characteristics: morphological differences among these three insects, life duration, length of the oviposition period, number of laid eggs, number of hatched eggs, percentage of hatched eggs, population dynamics of O.laevigatus and O.niger in the region of Apulia, population density of Frankliniella occidentalis and Orius spp. in the vineyard at flowering, presence of Orius spp. in South Bosnia and Herzegovina. Indigenous Orius laevigatus has a longer life than Orius laevigatus from biofactory and... |

In December 2016, CORE Organic Cofund consortium, including 26 partners from 19 countries, launched the new call supporting the European transnational organic research. The applicants participated in a two steps section procedure where in the first step out of 50 proposals 33 were invited to the second step where 12 research proposals were selected for the funding. The CORE Organic Cofund consortium spent in the call nearly 14 million Euro including cofunding from the European Commission. The selected project proposals are distributed across four thematic areas agreed on the level of consortium: Plant production systems, animal feed, livestock systems and organic food processing. The planned project activities should start from Spring 2018 and be... |

We developed a new protocol to study arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities in Bordeaux vineyards in a standardized way, in order to compare results obtained over years and between locations. To this end, we first used grapevine root samples instead of soil samples to avoid AMF spores or hyphae interacting with cover plants. We next increased the number of grapevine samples to obtain more representative coverage of AMF communities while decreasing variability intra-vineyard, especially for the larger parcels. In addition, we adapted the DNA extraction protocol dedicated to soil samples to grapevine roots, as a way to increase the yield and the purity of samples. These features, coupled to the choice of the LSU-D2 region as the molecular marker for... |

The capability of plants of increasing the ecosystem resistance to pests and invasive species is a well-known ecosystem service. However, monocultures (including vineyards) do not exploit the potential of plant diversity. The aims of this research are to develop new viticultural systems based on increased plant diversity within (e.g., cover crops) and/or around (e.g., hedges, vegetation spots, edgings) vineyards by planting selected plant species for the control of arthropods, soil-borne pests (oomycetes, fungi, nematodes), and foliar pathogens. In order to control pests, plants species can either i) repel arthropod pests, ii) attract arthropod pests to a trap crop or iii) attract and/or conserve beneficials. An extensive systematic literature was... |

Copper is a very common pesticide in organic viticulture, used against different diseases. But it is long term toxic for soils. That is why organic winegrowers try to reduce its use. Since 1988 ECO-Consult and the Organic Winegrowers Association of Germany (BÖW) has coordinated a on farm research program concerning copper reduction in organic vine protection. As a result of this reseach, the document outlines a plant protection strategy against Plasmopara viticola (downy mildew). Tables: - Use of Copper (kg/ha/a) by german organic wine growers in 1996 to 1998 - Frequency of Plasmopara viticola infection on clusters in the years 1990 to 2000 (ring trial - on farm research) |

Quote from the article "Potassium phosphite, also called «phosphonate», is a salt of phosphonic acid with the formula K2HPO3. It should not be confounded with phosphates, nor with the organophosphorous insecticides which are also called «phosphonates». Potassium phosphite can be used as a fungicide against oomycetes in various crops. In the early 1990ies, it was extensively tested on organically grown grapevines in Switzerland. It was effective against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and blocked the disease up to 3 days after infection. Phosphite was mobile and very persistent in plants and could be detected in grapes harvested one year after the last application. Analyses of 53 wine samples reveiled that the treatment inevitably leads to... |
